About Sulfur

Sulfur is one of the essential secondary macronutrients required by all crops, ranking alongside nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium in its importance to plant health. In agriculture, granular sulfur is used as a soil amendment to correct sulfur deficiencies, lower soil pH in alkaline conditions, and improve the availability of other nutrients such as phosphorus, iron, and zinc. Sulfur deficiency in crops leads to yellowing of new leaves, stunted growth, and reduced yields, making supplementation critical in soils where natural sulfur levels have been depleted through intensive farming or where atmospheric sulfur deposition has declined due to cleaner industrial emissions.

Beyond its role in agriculture, sulfur is a fundamental industrial chemical with wide-ranging applications. The largest industrial use of sulfur is in the production of sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄), one of the most important chemicals in global manufacturing. Sulfuric acid is used in phosphate fertilizer production, petroleum refining, metal processing, and the manufacture of chemicals, detergents, and pharmaceuticals. Sulfur is also used in rubber vulcanization, where it cross-links polymer chains to produce durable, elastic rubber products for tires, hoses, and seals. Additional applications include fungicides, paper manufacturing, and the production of carbon disulfide.

The majority of commercial sulfur is recovered as a byproduct of oil and gas refining, where it is removed from crude oil and natural gas to meet environmental sulfur-content regulations. This recovered sulfur is then processed into various forms depending on end-use requirements. Granular sulfur (2-5mm) is the most common form for agricultural and bulk industrial applications due to its ease of handling, storage stability, and uniform application characteristics. Lump sulfur and powdered sulfur are available for specific industrial processes that require different physical forms.

Intentions Institute Inc. sources sulfur from major producing regions including the UAE, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, and Canada, all of which have significant oil and gas refining capacity generating high-purity recovered sulfur. We supply sulfur in bulk vessel shipments for large industrial and agricultural buyers, as well as in 50kg bags and big bags for smaller volume requirements. Our team manages the logistics and documentation needed for safe international transport of sulfur, ensuring compliance with applicable shipping regulations and quality standards throughout the supply chain.
